Investigating walkability and bikeability in compact vs. new extensions: the case of Greater Cairo

Despite the urgent need to adopt sustainable transportation methods reduce pollution, some cities, particularly in developing countries, are still prioritizing construction of roads for private cars. The Greater Cairo Region is experiencing increased reliance on cars, causing strain road network, leading traffic congestion, decreased walkability, and social isolation, especially gated communities. Old downtown has implemented options, but more action needed from city authorities prioritize pedestrians, cyclists, public transit users create livable cities promote health. objective this study assess walkability bikeability three distinct centers: Cairo, which represents historic area Region, newer extensions, namely, New 6th October City. analysis will be based Walk Score metric, while relationship with urban form integration evaluated using space syntax in-depth maps. results indicate that rates surpass those extensions due compact fabric highly integrated street network activities. In conclusion, sheds light reasons car dependency new emphasizes significance collaboration between local authorities, Ministry Housing, global organizations, international agendas.
